Do You Smell Bacon???

This little piggy went to market...this little piggy stayed home...this little piggy ate apples, bananas, cereal...

Oh my.  He is gonna be a handful!

Hey y'all!  I'm burstin' with excitement and couldn't wait to share the news!!!  Let me just say I LOVE pigs!  Oh.  My.  Goodness.  They are the cutest creatures ever.  I always told my husband one day...  Well, that day has come.  That's right..we have a piggy!  Boss Hogg is the name.  And he is one stubborn pig.  A bit grumpy, temperamental and quite rude too.  Our first meeting... lets just say he didn't make the best first impression.  The moment he met my husband he latched on to the tip of his shoe as if it was something to behead.  His good shoes!  I was in flip flops and man did my toes curl quickly!  I can just imagine what he would do with pretty red painted toenails.  Yikes!

Here is my new baby!

 Waitin' for some chow

 grubalicious

Look at that face!  He is gonna be soooo spoiled...

We've only had him a few days but I've already learned bunches.  For starters - never try and transport a pig across town.. in the back seat... after you've just made a trip to the Farmers' market.  REALLY not a good idea!!!  I'm tellin' you - if I had not frozen in complete fear...frantically peelin' bananas to throw at the enormous porker crawling his way over the bench seat... I would have had a crack up picture for y'all!  Honestly.  I wonder about us sometimes...

Mental note number two - when a pig poos in the car it is ghastly.  YUK!  Soooo thankful that we remembered to put a tarp down and were almost home before he decided to relieve himself.  Once we got home we had the delightful task of trying to coax him out of the back seat... into a crate so he could be carried to the back yard.  I haven't worked up a sweat like that for years.  Who needs the gym?  Just try to push the buttocks of a 150 pound stubborn pig into a crate... held in mid air.. by 4 overly exuberant children.  Finally.  After much pushin', shovin' and coaxin' he climbed into the crate and was on his way to his new abode.  Once in the yard he nosed around smelling everything within his reach in perfect piggy fashion.  He loves his treats and when he gets angry you know - because the prickly hairs on the back of his neck and spine stand to attention like a perfectly manicured Mohawk.  That's when it's time to run...run fast from Boss Hogg!

After he has had a few weeks to acclimate he will make his journey inside.  We will have to see how he does.  Pot Bellied Pigs are very intelligent.  And he has been known to get the step stool from the bathroom, push it down the hall to the fridge, pick the child lock on the fridge and help himself.  So we will see if I can get this unruly piggy under control.

I have to say - I'm in hog heaven!  I love my Boss!  And - all the kids (except Ally) like him too.  I think my husband may even secretly like him...sshhhh you didn't hear that from me.

Now I can truly call it our Rise and Swine Farm. =)

Until then...
Jessie

Invisible Monster

May 23, 2020, I woke to a miracle surrounding a loved one. Later, I sat in the gardens watching butterflies perch upon lavender lilacs while my Sweet Shalom giggled and chased after them. It had been a perfect day. The air was warm, but the skies overcast like a storm was about to roll in.   Life changes quickly...    The message flashed on the screen.        Wait - he's gone? Dear...I don't know what to call you, I've always wondered, with the slamming of the prison door, did you know what your choices would cost your children? Did you care?  My grandpa knew you as a kid. He was your pastor, said your parents were good people. He said you were a good kid too, but somewhere along the journey you lost your way.    You lost your way... and I was one of many that paid for your choices.      One of my last visits with you left me with a shoulder injury. The physical pain is a reminder that children should never have to v...
Written 2/18/21 February - I would be delighted if this month never existed. In reality it’s the shortest of the year, but each day can feel tormenting to walk through...this week in particular.    2/18/10 was the day we found out those 2 little ones we planned to adopt would never be ours.  The room we had made in our hearts would remain empty.  The crib empty.  The clothes newly washed and hanging were packed back into tubs. Closet and drawers empty. Dreams lost.  Hearts shattered. 2/16/17 was Miriam’s due date. Instead of snuggling and breathing in a fresh babe our perfect girl lay cradled in dirt.  She would have been 4 this year...4.  It’s the first year Kai didn’t remember...didn’t ask to make her birthday cupcakes or take her flowers.  I didn’t remind him.  His little heart needs to heal and move on.  As her mom, I’ll never forget. Even though I move forward a part of my heart was lost, and I will never be the same. 2/1...

Resurrection Cookies

I wanted to share this with y'all.  I'm not sure where this recipe/idea originated from, but a friend gave it to me many years ago.  Thanks, Mary!  Since that time it's something I've done with our children every year.  Part of our Easter celebration they look forward to - and while they're having fun cooking with mom they're also learning about the cost Jesus paid to give us the gift of salvation.  I'm sure many of you have made these before but I wanted to share for those that hadn't.  Hope y'all enjoy! Resurrection Cookies: To be made on the evening before Easter. 1 Cup whole pecans 1 tsp. vinegar 3 egg whites  pinch of salt 1 cup sugar zipper baggie wooden spoon tape Bible Preheat oven to 300 (this is important- don't wait until you're half done with the recipe). Place pecans in zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break into small pieces.  Explain that after Jesus was arr...
