ACHOOO

Schools done...dinner is simmering away in the crockpot...wet flakes are fallin'...kids are tucked snug in their beds...and aside from the whirl of the washer the house is silent.  I think I may take advantage of this awkward silence and tuck myself beneath the warm covers.

Sickness doesn't visit our household often but when it does it seems to hit everyone at once.  That's when it's time to break out the natural remedies so we can get back to enjoying life.  When someone is showing signs of sickness the first thing we do is eliminate ALL sugar and juice like crazy (although that didn't happen this time).  If that doesn't work, it's time to bring out the cold kicker.  As soon as that mysterious jar is pulled from the back of the fridge a miracle takes place. Suddenly, everyone is well and they all run quickly from the room!  I must admit:  It. Is. NASTY.  However it works... and my children know it.  Still, they give much grief about taking it, so this time I didn't mention anything.  To my surprise they pulled the jar out themselves yesterday and voluntarily gulped it down.  Thankfully, they are feeling better today...  Still in need of more rest and of course... another hardy dose of cold kicker.  On the other hand I'm SOOOO sick and since I'm pregnant I can't take this nasty concoction!  Guess it's hot tea, honey and lemon for me.

Just in case there are any brave souls that would like to try this remedy here it is:

1/8 cup freshly grated ginger
1/8 cup chopped yellow onion
1 sprig fresh rosemary
Small handful of fresh sage
1/8 cup freshly grated horseradish (you can find this at Whole Foods)
4 cloves garlic
1 Tablespoon ground cayenne pepper
organic apple cider vinegar
1/8 cup raw unfiltered honey

Combine the first 7 ingredients in a quart size mason jar and pour in enough vinegar to cover; leaving 1" of headspace.  Shake daily and leave in a dark cabinet for 2-4 weeks.  Strain, making sure to squeeze out all the liquid.  Heat the liquid on low and add the honey.  Stir and pour into a clean bottle.  Keep refrigerated.

*Take 1-2 Tablespoons once a day*
It can also be diluted in a cup of warm water (my kids think it's even nastier that way).

Be warned: this is VERY hot and raw apple cider vinegar can grow dangerous bacteria so use good judgment especially when giving to children.

Until then...
Jessie

Light Always Wins

I was seven when I stepped foot into the Tel Aviv Airport accompanied by my stepdad - a Palestinian. The Israeli soldiers stood armed as they ripped through each of our suitcases, pulled my dad into a room for questioning, and detained us for several hours. We were not there as tourists. We were on our way to Jericho to visit family... but we were the enemy. Even at seven the hatred between all was undeniable. As a child I did not comprehend fully but I remember...fear. Walking the roads of that country for a month is an experience I will never forget. I remember once being at a family member's home while they argued over who was right, the Jews or Palestinians. I remember the tears, the anger, and shouting. I can't recall most of the words spoken that day. I don't know whose argument was stronger. What I do know is...what the Bible says about God's chosen people, and that in war... no one wins...even when it is necessary there is always suffering for both sides. The J...

Judgment Loomed

As I exited the door my heart was pierced with their animosity.  Hatred and poison spewed from their lips.  Murderer!  Whore!  Baby killer!  You'll rot in Hell for what you did!  Over and over...  The savage mob encircled me with no escape.  Screaming just a breath away from my face.  Shoving with such force I was almost knocked to the ground.  They spat in my hair.  Humiliated.  Tears streamed down my cheeks as I pushed through the violence.  Once inside my car I began to weep.   Even in the present their vile words reel through my mind.  Beads of sweat began to form in my tightly clinched fists.  Squirming in my chair... biting my lower lip as an attempt to hold it together.  Peering above the Pastor's head as though I was looking at him... knowing if I did I would burst into tears.  That was my experience at church...
